13106 ORFF-SCHULWERK, VOLUME
3: PIANO MUSIC - NIKOLAUS LAHUSEN
The "sonic haikus" on this disc were written as piano exercises
for Carl Orff's students. These short pieces, many under one minute,
create intriguing vignettes, and several found their way into the composer's
Carmina Burana. Pianist, composer and former Orff student Wilfred
Hiller joins Nikolaus Lahusen in performing Bourdunubungen. Based
on firsthand experience with Orff, Hiller has notated previously improvised
parts. Repetitive phrases show Orff as a forefather of the Minimalist
movement. Short, structured pieces by his wife, Gertrud, are also included
on the disk. The performers exhibit superb technical skill with a poetic
sensitivity.
