* 14163 DREAMING...NOW, THEN (A RETROSPECTIVE 1982-1997) - STEVE ROACH

This, a beautiful double-CD collection of over 20 compositions culled from nine of Steve Roach's albums on Fortuna Records is an eye-opening look at the career of this genre-defying musician. The first CD, The Ritual Continues, is a selection of tribal/ritual cuts that bring the ancient into the present, bridging time as they challenge barriers and categories. If this is world music, it's a world composed of thousands of diverse rhythmic, percussive and musical elements - the modern/ancient trance-dance of "The Ritual Continues," the Jon Hassell-like layers of "Comeback," the space rock of "Seeking," the lonely spirit-gathering and fabulous didgeridoo of "Artifacts."

The second CD, Looking for Safety, takes us away from the outback and the burning fire and into the stars and heavens. Here, Roach constructs sonic meta-worlds in which to drift and dream. "Magnificent Gallery," "Slow Turning" and "Drift" remind us that we are but specks of dust in the cosmos. This is excellent music for meditation, reflection, rest and dreams.
