* 13178 FAIR PLAY - PATRICK BALL (.pdf)

Looking over the catalogue which accompanies this CD with its roster of largely unfamiliar names, it would seem that the US based environmental music label Celestial Harmonies occupies a position somewhat akin to that enjoyed by ARC across Europe. Their collection of musicians and styles is eclectic indeed, which includes Patrick Ball, harper extraordinaire.

Fair Play is Patrick's ninth release for the label, two of which encompass his skill as storyteller, a reflection of his live performance. However, it is as a musician that Patrick's true talent undoubtedly lies and the tunes he presents on Fair Play are as pure and traditional as one could wish to hear. Performing entirely on his own with no additional musicians to compliment or adorn, Patrick is prepared to live or die by his own hands and anyone with a penchant for the instrument will be more than impressed with his sensitive and considered renditions.

With the exception of Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, the selection of tunes are largely unfamiliar to these ears at least, which includes a heavy raid on the repertoire of Irish harper come composer Turlough O'Carolan. A favourite source of inspiration for Patrick and an inspiration for earlier recordings, six of the fourteen selections are selected from this source.

It may be that such a specialist instrument may not always meet your mood or feelings but Patrick's playing is quite exquisite and as the strings magically meandered and penetrated the early sun one recent Spring morning, his music seemed to catch the moment just perfectly.
